In early July 2007, Grand Hyatt Melbourne has begun an AUD $40 million renovation which includes a refurbishment of the hotel's upper and lower lobbies, Russell Street and Collins Street entrances, a new restaurant and bar that will replace Plane Tree Café and Bar Deco as well as the addition of an exclusive retail environment and brand new events venue called the Residence which will set a new benchmark for function spaces in Australia.

The redevelopment of the site will bring back to life one of the city's intimate laneways, Beaney Lane. In contrast, a modern internal laneway will link the hotel's lobby with the Collins Street foyer and retail tenancies. The renovation's design will be completed by a team of leading Australian architects and interior designers including Bar Studio, Billard Leece and Graphos Architects.

The new restaurant and bar will open in October 2008 in time to host the hotel's Spring Racing Carnival celebrations while the rest of the redevelopment, including the opening of the Residence, will be complete in January 2009.
