Thanks to the potato famine in Ireland, many Irish families took the long and perilous voyage to Australia in the 1840s, a time when the Victorian colony had barely kicked-off. The town of Koroit was settled on the slopes of Tower Hill where the volcanic soil was - and still is - perfect for potato farming.

Koroit Hotel, better known as Mickey Bourke's after the famous jockey who owned it from 1922, is now owned by Wendy and Bruce Murley, who have rejuvenated the pub and introduced excellent food. Bruce is a chef with 17 years under his belt, including a long stint at Yulara resort. The pub has a fairly small front bar, but through a doorway to the back is a big dining room where heart-warming meals are served and the standard of food has drawn residents and tourists from nearby Warrnambool and Port Fairy.

Bruce uses as much regional produce as possible, and sources excellent fish (especially King George whiting) from Port Fairy, and Western District beef from Warrnambool. It's still an Irish pub, with Guinness on tap, Irish stew, and beef and Guinness pie.

But the rest of the menu is fairly eclectic - kangaroo, Thai chicken, seafood kebabs and Atlantic salmon - so there's something for everyone. At weekends you get live Irish, Celtic or folk music thrown in.

The bed and breakfast accommodation upstairs is pretty popular, despite the fact that all nine guestrooms share older-style bathroom facilities. Come here for spirited conviviality rather than luxury, and you won't be disappointed.
